Bearded dragon: UVB and the temperature gradient that keep them alive

The most common cause of bearded dragon illness is incorrect UVB and incorrect temperature. Here is what the enclosure actually needs, why it matters, and how to set it up correctly.

Bearded dragon: UVB and the temperature gradient that keep them alive

The two most common reasons bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) get sick — and the two most common reasons they die prematurely — are incorrect UVB lighting and incorrect temperature gradients. A bearded dragon in a tank with a basking bulb but no UVB is a bearded dragon that will develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) within 6-18 months. A bearded dragon in a tank with UVB but no temperature gradient is a bearded dragon that can't thermoregulate, can't digest, and slowly deteriorates.

The husbandry is straightforward. The setup is well-established. The mistake rate in the hobby is high because the setup looks simple — a bulb, a tank, a dragon. The visual simplicity conceals a precise biological requirement. The bearded dragon's health depends on the owner getting the lighting and the temperature right.

Why UVB matters

UVB (Ultraviolet B) light is essential for vitamin D3 synthesis in bearded dragons. The chain works like this:

  • UVB (wavelength 290-315 nm) hits the dragon's skin
  • The dragon's skin converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)
  • Vitamin D3 is metabolised in the liver and kidneys to its active form (calcitriol)
  • Calcitriol regulates calcium absorption from the intestines
  • Without calcitriol, the dragon cannot absorb dietary calcium
  • Without absorbed calcium, the dragon pulls calcium from its bones
  • The bones weaken, deform, and eventually fracture
  • This is metabolic bone disease (MBD)

MBD is preventable. The prevention is adequate UVB. The setup is straightforward. The cost is moderate. Yet MBD remains one of the most common diagnoses in captive bearded dragons, particularly in juveniles.

The UVB source options

The UVB source options for bearded dragons:

1. Linear fluorescent UVB tubes (T5 HO)

The standard for bearded dragons. The tube is mounted inside the enclosure, parallel to the dragon's basking spot. The dragon basks within 10-12 inches of the tube to receive adequate UVB.

  • Best brands: Arcadia T5 HO 12% (or 14% for taller enclosures), Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO 10.0
  • Tube length: should cover at least 1/2 to 2/3 of the enclosure length
  • Replacement: every 12 months (UVB output degrades even if the tube still glows)
  • Recommended for: all bearded dragon enclosures

T5 HO tubes are the workhorse of reptile UVB. They produce high-output UVB across a wide area. The tube should be mounted in a reflective fixture (Arcadia or Zoo Med fixtures are designed for this purpose).

2. Compact fluorescent UVB bulbs

Smaller, screw-in UVB bulbs. Less effective than T5 tubes but still useful for small enclosures.

  • Best brands: Zoo Med ReptiSun Compact 10.0, Arcadia Compact 12%
  • Mounting: in a dome fixture above the basking spot
  • Coverage area: smaller than T5 tubes. A single compact bulb may not cover the entire enclosure
  • Replacement: every 12 months

Compact bulbs are a fallback option. For a properly-sized bearded dragon enclosure (4x2x2 feet minimum), T5 tubes are preferred.

3. Mercury vapour UVB bulbs

Combined UVB, UVA, and heat in a single bulb. The bulb is mounted in a dome fixture above the basking spot.

  • Best brands: Zoo Med PowerSun, Arcadia Solar Basking
  • Output: high UVB at close range, falling off rapidly at distance
  • Heat: also produces heat, so the basking spot temperature must be monitored
  • Replacement: every 12-24 months

Mercury vapour bulbs are useful for taller enclosures (where the basking spot is 18-24 inches from the bulb). They are not a substitute for T5 tubes if the enclosure is shorter.

4. Metal halide UVB floodlights

The most powerful UVB source. Suitable for very tall enclosures (3+ feet) or large display enclosures.

  • Best brands: Arcadia Solar Flood, Zoo Med PowerSun floods
  • Output: very high UVB across a wide area
  • Heat: significant heat output. The basking spot temperature must be monitored
  • Cost: more expensive than T5 or mercury vapour
  • Replacement: every 12-24 months

Metal halide is overkill for most home enclosures but is appropriate for very tall or large enclosures.

The UVB recommendation for bearded dragons

For a 4x2x2 foot enclosure with a 12-inch basking distance:

  • Primary: Arcadia T5 HO 12% or Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO 10.0
  • Tube length: 24-36 inches
  • Mounting: in a reflector, parallel to the basking spot, 10-12 inches above the dragon's back when basking
  • Replacement: annually

The dragon should be able to bask within 10-12 inches of the UVB tube. If the basking spot is too far from the tube, the UVB intensity is too low. If the basking spot is too close, the dragon can be exposed to excessive UVB (rare with T5 tubes, more common with mercury vapour).

The "no UVB" mistake

The most common and most damaging mistake: keeping a bearded dragon without UVB. The setup includes:

  • A basking bulb (provides heat and visible light)
  • A ceramic heat emitter or red bulb (provides heat at night)
  • A regular household bulb or LED (provides visible light)
  • No UVB

The dragon in this setup cannot synthesise vitamin D3. The dragon cannot absorb dietary calcium. The dragon develops MBD. The progression is gradual, often unnoticed by the owner until the dragon has advanced disease:

  • Early: slight trembling in the limbs, slightly soft jaw
  • Moderate: swollen limbs, bent spine, lethargy
  • Severe: fractures, seizures, inability to walk

The treatment is vitamin D3 supplementation (calcium with D3, vet-administered vitamin D3 injections) and UVB exposure. The prevention is correct UVB from the start.

The "wrong UVB" mistake

The dragon has UVB but the UVB is wrong:

  • Compact fluorescent in a dome far from the dragon: the UVB intensity drops rapidly with distance
  • T8 tube (older technology) instead of T5 HO: T8 tubes produce about half the UVB of T5 HO
  • UVB through glass or plastic: UVB does not penetrate glass or most plastics. The UVB tube must be inside the enclosure, not filtered through a screen top
  • UVB tube not replaced in over 12 months: UVB output degrades. A tube that's been running for 18 months produces very little UVB, even if it still glows
  • Wrong UVB percentage: a 5.0 or 6% tube is too weak for a bearded dragon. The 10.0 or 12% tube is correct

The fix: the owner checks the UVB setup with a UVB meter (Solarmeter 6.5) to confirm the intensity at the basking spot. The reading should be 3-5 (UVI) at the basking spot.

The temperature gradient

Bearded dragons are ectothermic — they rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature. They use a temperature gradient in the enclosure to thermoregulate:

  • Basking spot: 100-110°F (38-43°C). The hottest spot, where the dragon warms up
  • Warm side: 85-95°F (29-35°C). The general warm area
  • Cool side: 75-85°F (24-29°C). The cooler area where the dragon cools down
  • Nighttime: 65-75°F (18-24°C). The temperature drops at night; supplementary heating is needed if the room gets below 65°F

The dragon moves between these zones to maintain its preferred body temperature. The gradient is essential because the dragon cannot thermoregulate in a uniform-temperature enclosure.

The basking spot

The basking spot is the hottest area of the enclosure. The dragon spends 4-6 hours per day basking, usually in the morning and after meals. The basking spot is created by:

  • A basking bulb (incandescent or halogen) mounted above a basking platform
  • The basking platform is positioned so the dragon's back is 10-12 inches from the bulb
  • The temperature at the basking platform surface is 100-110°F

The basking bulb options

  • Halogen flood bulb: the best option. Produces bright, white light and heat. The dragon's basking behaviour is triggered by visible light
  • Incandescent bulb: works but less efficient. Less bright. The dragon may not bask as readily
  • Ceramic heat emitter (CHE): produces heat without visible light. Useful for supplemental heat but should not be the primary basking source
  • Red or coloured "basking" bulb: not recommended. The coloured light disrupts the dragon's perception and may cause eye issues

The basking temperature measurement

The basking temperature must be measured at the basking platform surface, where the dragon actually sits. The measurement:

  • Infrared (non-contact) thermometer: the best tool. Point at the basking platform surface. The reading is the platform temperature
  • Probe thermometer: place the probe on the basking platform under the bulb. The reading is the platform temperature
  • Stick-on thermometer: not accurate at the basking spot. Useful for ambient temperatures in the warm and cool zones

The owner should measure the basking spot temperature with the infrared thermometer at least once per week. The temperature changes with seasons, room temperature, and bulb age.

The warm side and cool side

The warm side of the enclosure is the general area away from the basking spot. The cool side is the opposite end of the enclosure. The temperatures:

  • Warm side: 85-95°F (29-35°C)
  • Cool side: 75-85°F (24-29°C)

The cool side is essential. The dragon needs a place to cool down when it gets too hot. Without a cool side, the dragon can overheat, particularly in summer or in rooms that get warm.

The temperature gradient is created by:

  • Placing the basking bulb at one end of the enclosure
  • Letting the temperature naturally fall off as you move toward the other end
  • Using a thermostat to regulate the basking bulb

A 4x2x2 foot enclosure with a basking bulb at one end will naturally have a temperature gradient from the basking spot through the warm side to the cool side. The owner may need to adjust the bulb wattage or the enclosure position to get the right temperatures.

Nighttime heating

The nighttime temperature in the enclosure should be 65-75°F (18-24°C). In most homes, the room temperature drops at night, and the enclosure temperature drops with it. If the room stays above 65°F, no supplemental nighttime heating is needed.

If the room gets below 65°F at night:

  • Ceramic heat emitter (CHE): mounted in a dome above the enclosure, on a thermostat
  • Under-tank heater (UTH): placed under the enclosure, on a thermostat. Useful if the room gets very cold
  • Heat cable: similar to UTH but more flexible
  • Avoid: red bulbs, blue bulbs, "night-glow" bulbs. The visible light disrupts the dragon's sleep cycle

The CHE is the most popular option. It produces heat without visible light. Mounted on a thermostat, it maintains the nighttime temperature without overheating the enclosure.

The "no gradient" mistake

The second most common mistake: an enclosure with no temperature gradient. The setup:

  • A single bulb heating the entire enclosure
  • The temperature is uniform — 80°F, 85°F, anywhere
  • No basking spot, no cool side

The dragon in this setup cannot thermoregulate. The dragon cannot warm up after a meal. The dragon cannot cool down when overheated. The dragon's digestion is impaired (digestion requires high body temperature). The dragon's immune system is compromised (immune function requires thermal cycling).

Over time, the dragon develops chronic health issues: poor digestion, weight loss, lethargy, immunosuppression. The owner may not connect the lack of gradient to the dragon's illness. The setup looks fine — there's a bulb, the temperature is comfortable. But the dragon's biological requirement is unmet.

The fix: install the gradient. The basking bulb at one end. The cool side at the other. The dragon has options.

The "wrong basking temperature" mistake

The basking temperature is wrong:

  • Too hot: 115°F, 120°F. The dragon overheats, can develop heatstroke, becomes lethargic, refuses food
  • Too cold: 90°F, 95°F. The dragon cannot warm up enough to digest food, becomes lethargic, develops chronic digestive issues

The fix: measure the basking spot temperature with an infrared thermometer. Adjust the bulb wattage or the basking platform height to get the temperature in the 100-110°F range.

The basking temperature varies by age:

  • Juveniles (under 6 months): 105-110°F (40-43°C). Higher temperature supports growth
  • Adults (over 18 months): 95-105°F (35-40°C). Slightly lower for adults
  • Senior or sick dragons: slightly lower, around 95°F

The thermometer setup

The owner should have at least three thermometers:

  • Basking spot: infrared thermometer for measurement. Optional secondary probe thermometer
  • Warm side ambient: probe thermometer or digital thermometer with external probe
  • Cool side ambient: probe thermometer or digital thermometer with external probe

A common mistake: the owner has one thermometer, placed in the middle of the enclosure. The temperature reading is meaningless because the dragon experiences different temperatures in different zones.

The fix: thermometers in each zone. The basking spot, warm side, cool side. The owner knows the actual temperatures in each area.

The "no UVB and wrong temperatures" combination

The most damaging combination: no UVB and wrong temperatures. The dragon develops MBD (from no UVB), cannot digest (from low temperatures), becomes immunosuppressed, develops secondary infections. The dragon dies young, often without the owner understanding why.

The owner often assumes the dragon is "just young" or "isn't adjusting". The dragon isn't adjusting. The dragon is sick because the husbandry is inadequate.

The fix: correct the husbandry. Install the T5 HO UVB. Set up the temperature gradient. Measure with thermometers. The dragon recovers (slowly, over months) if the disease isn't too advanced.

The 30-day "new dragon" protocol

For a new bearded dragon:

Days 1-7: settle in

  • The dragon may not eat for the first 1-3 days
  • The dragon may hide frequently
  • The owner should not handle the dragon excessively
  • The dragon should have access to UVB and gradient from day 1
  • The enclosure should be at the correct temperatures

Days 8-14: initial health assessment

  • A vet visit (within the first week) for a baseline health check
  • Fecal testing for parasites
  • Physical exam for signs of MBD, dehydration, or other issues
  • Adjustment to the new enclosure

Days 15-30: observation and adjustment

  • Monitor eating, basking, bowel movements
  • Adjust enclosure setup as needed
  • Begin handling and bonding (10-15 minutes per day, gradually increasing)
  • Continue weekly observations

A healthy dragon in a correct setup thrives from day 1. A dragon from a pet store may have pre-existing issues (parasites, MBD, dehydration). The vet visit catches these early.

The "common health issues" caused by incorrect UVB and temperatures

A list of the conditions caused or worsened by incorrect UVB and temperatures:

Metabolic bone disease (MBD)

  • Cause: insufficient UVB, insufficient dietary calcium, calcium:phosphorus imbalance
  • Signs: trembling, soft jaw, swollen limbs, bent spine, fractures
  • Prevention: correct UVB, correct calcium supplementation
  • Treatment: vet care, calcium injections, UVB exposure

Impaction

  • Cause: low basking temperature slows digestion. Substrate (sand, walnut shell, etc.) is ingested and causes blockage
  • Signs: lethargy, loss of appetite, inability to defecate
  • Prevention: correct basking temperature, no loose substrate
  • Treatment: vet care, potentially surgery

Respiratory infections

  • Cause: low temperatures, high humidity, drafty enclosure
  • Signs: gaping, mucus, wheezing, lethargy
  • Prevention: correct gradient, low humidity (30-40%), no drafts
  • Treatment: vet care, antibiotics

Brumation issues

  • Cause: incorrect temperature cycle, the dragon can't enter or exit brumation cleanly
  • Prevention: natural seasonal temperature variation (slightly cooler in winter, slightly warmer in summer)
  • Note: brumation is normal and should not be prevented

Obesity

  • Cause: overfeeding, low activity, no exercise
  • Prevention: measured feeding, exercise opportunities, correct temperature (the dragon is more active at the right temperature)
  • Treatment: diet reduction, increased exercise

The substrate consideration

The substrate is part of the husbandry. The substrate affects:

  • Impaction risk: loose substrates (sand, walnut shell, gravel) can be ingested and cause impaction
  • Humidity: some substrates (coconut fibre, moss) hold humidity
  • Cleaning: some substrates are easier to clean

The recommended substrates for bearded dragons:

  • Solid substrate: tile (ceramic or slate), reptile carpet, paper towels, newspaper. Easy to clean, no impaction risk
  • Loose substrate (acceptable, with care): bioactive substrate (organic topsoil + sand + excavator clay). Acceptable for experienced keepers who manage the impaction risk
  • Avoid: calcium sand (marketed for reptiles but causes impaction), walnut shell (sharp, causes impaction), gravel (causes impaction), wood chips (sharp, can harbour bacteria)

For new owners and juvenile dragons, solid substrate is the safer choice.

The "minimum setup" checklist

For a new bearded dragon enclosure:

  • Enclosure: minimum 4x2x2 feet (120-gallon equivalent). Larger is better
  • Basking bulb: halogen flood bulb, 50-100W depending on enclosure size and distance
  • UVB: Arcadia T5 HO 12% or Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO 10.0, 24-36 inches
  • Basking platform: positioned 10-12 inches from both the UVB and the basking bulb. Surface temperature 100-110°F
  • Cool side: 75-85°F
  • Thermometers: at least one in each temperature zone
  • Hygrometer: for humidity monitoring
  • Substrate: solid (tile, paper towels)
  • Hides: at least two hides (one on the warm side, one on the cool side)
  • Decor: branches, rocks, plants (for climbing and basking)
  • Food and water dishes: shallow water dish, fresh water daily
  • Timer: for the lights (10-12 hour photoperiod)

The setup is more nuanced than it looks. The setup is the difference between a thriving dragon and a sick one.

The bottom line

The bearded dragon is a hardy, adaptable species. In its native Australian habitat, the dragon basks in the desert sun, eats insects and plants, and lives for 8-15 years. In captivity, the dragon requires the same inputs: UVB light, a temperature gradient, a varied diet, and adequate space. The most common errors are the simplest to avoid: incorrect UVB (use T5 HO), incorrect gradient (measure with thermometers), and incorrect setup (use the minimum checklist). The dragon that has correct UVB, correct temperatures, and a correct diet is a dragon that thrives. The dragon that doesn't is a dragon that develops MBD, impaction, respiratory infections, or obesity. The setup is the foundation. The owner who invests in the correct setup has a dragon that lives a full, healthy life. The owner who cuts corners on the setup has a dragon that suffers and dies prematurely.
