The warning signs of heatstroke

Mild heat stress. The chinchilla is lying flat on the belly (the "pancake" position) with the limbs extended. The chinchilla's ears are bright red (the increased blood flow to the ears is the cooling attempt). The chinchilla is breathing more rapidly than normal. The chinchilla is less active. The chinchilla is drinking more water.
Moderate heat stress. The chinchilla is lethargic, is not moving, is not responding to the owner. The ears are still red but may be starting to feel warm to the touch. The breathing is rapid and shallow. The chinchilla is drooling or has a wet chin (the chinchilla is producing more saliva in an attempt to cool the mouth). The chinchilla is not eating.
Severe heatstroke. The chinchilla is collapsed, is unresponsive, is breathing very rapidly or is breathing with difficulty. The ears are hot to the touch. The chinchilla may be having seizures. The chinchilla may have bloody diarrhea. The chinchilla is in critical condition, and the chinchilla needs emergency veterinary care within minutes.
The progression from mild to severe can be rapid — sometimes within 30–60 minutes. The owner who is monitoring the chinchilla in the warm weather is the owner who catches the early signs. The owner who checks the chinchilla every 1–2 hours during the warm months is the owner who has the best chance of intervening in time.
The emergency response

The owner is transporting the chinchilla to the vet, or the owner is cleaning the cage in the garage, or the owner is moving the chinchilla to a different room, and the chinchilla is in the garage "for just a few minutes." The garage is not air-conditioned, and the garage temperature can exceed 100°F on a hot day. The seasonal monitoring
The chinchilla's heat-safety monitoring should be seasonal and continuous. The right monitoring:
- Year-round: a thermometer at the cage, with the temperature logged daily.
- Spring and fall (mild temperatures): weekly visual inspection of the chinchilla, monthly weigh-in (a chinchilla that is losing weight may be in early heat stress), and verification that the air conditioning is functional.
