Cage-bird exercise: out-of-cage time and safety
The companion parrot that lives its entire life in a cage is a parrot that is, in many ways, experiencing the same chronic deficit as the indoor cat that lives its entire life in a small apartment. The parrot's body is built for flight, the parrot's brain is built for the cognitive engagement of a varied environment, and the parrot's social structure is built for interaction with a flock. The cage, no matter how large, is a fraction of the environment the parrot is built for. The out-of-cage time is the bridge. The out-of-cage time is the period during which the parrot flies, climbs, explores, interacts with the humans, and engages in the natural behaviors that the cage cannot accommodate. The out-of-cage time is the difference between a parrot that is physically healthy, cognitively engaged, and emotionally balanced, and a parrot that is physically deconditioned, cognitively under-stimulated, and emotionally frustrated.
This article is going to walk you through the practical protocol for out-of-cage time for companion parrots — the daily activity quota, the bird-proofing of a room (because the room is a minefield of hazards that the owner often does not see), the wing-clipping decision (because the wing-clipping is the most controversial decision in the parrot-keeping world, and the decision depends on the individual bird, the individual household, and the risk tolerance), the recall requirement (because the bird that is out of the cage is a bird that must be able to be retrieved safely), and the four mistakes that turn a free-flight session into a tragedy. I am an avian keeper and consultant, and the out-of-cage time is one of the most common topics of my consultations. The cases that go well share a common feature: the owner has bird-proofed the room, has committed to the daily out-of-cage time, has trained the recall, and has made an informed decision about the wing-clipping. The cases that go poorly share a different common feature: the owner has not done the preparation, and the unprepared session produces the escape, the injury, or the death.
I want to be clear at the start: the out-of-cage time is not optional for a healthy parrot. The parrot that is kept in a cage 24/7 is a parrot that is at risk of obesity, muscle wasting, behavioral problems (feather destructive behavior, screaming, biting), and a shortened lifespan. The out-of-cage time is the right intervention. The question is not whether to do it. The question is how to do it safely.
The daily activity quota, in concrete terms
A companion parrot in the wild spends 4–8 hours per day in active behavior (flying, foraging, social interaction, vocalization), and the rest of the day in rest. The companion parrot that is in a cage 24/7 is missing the 4–8 hours of activity, and the chronic deficit produces the behavioral and physical problems described above.
The right out-of-cage time for a companion parrot is 2–4 hours per day, as a minimum. The 2 hours is the absolute minimum for a small bird (budgie, cockatiel, lovebird) in a household with a smaller cage and limited flight opportunity. The 4 hours is the recommended target for a medium to large bird (conure, Amazon, African grey, cockatoo, macaw) in a household with a moderate-sized cage. The 4+ hours is the ideal for a bird that is in a smaller cage or that is in a more demanding species (the cockatoos and the macaws, in particular, need significant out-of-cage time to thrive).
The 2–4 hours can be split into multiple sessions (morning, afternoon, evening) or consolidated into a single long session. The split sessions are typically easier for the owner to fit into a workday, and the split sessions are typically better for the bird's natural activity pattern (most parrots are most active in the morning and in the evening, with a quieter midday). The consolidated long session is the weekend pattern for many owners.
The out-of-cage time should be in a bird-proofed room, on a play stand or a T-stand, with a variety of toys, perches, and foraging opportunities. The bird that is sitting on a single perch in an empty room is a bird that is not getting the cognitive engagement that the out-of-cage time is supposed to provide.
The bird-proofing of a room
The room that the parrot is in during the out-of-cage time is a room that must be bird-proofed. The bird-proofing is the prevention of the most common accidents, and the bird-proofing is the difference between a safe room and a death trap.
Hazard 1: Open windows and doors. The most common escape route. The parrot that is out of the cage and sees an open window is a parrot that may attempt to fly out. The flight out of the window is the loss of the bird (the bird rarely survives more than a few days outside, and the bird is rarely recovered). The fix is to keep all windows closed during the out-of-cage time, and to keep all doors to the outside closed. The screens on the windows are not enough — a parrot can chew through a screen in minutes.
Hazard 2: The kitchen. The kitchen is the most dangerous room in the house for a parrot, and the kitchen is the room that must be off-limits during the out-of-cage time. The hazards include:
- Hot stoves, hot pots, hot pans. The parrot that lands on a hot surface is a parrot that is severely burned. The parrot that flies into a hot pan is a parrot that is severely burned or killed.
- Non-stick cookware. The non-stick coating (Teflon, PTFE, and similar) releases toxic fumes when heated to moderate temperatures (300–400°F), and the fumes are lethal to birds. The non-stick pan that is heated on a stove is a non-stick pan that is releasing fumes that can kill a bird in the same room within minutes. The "Teflon toxicity" or "PTFE toxicosis" is one of the most common causes of sudden bird death in the home, and the prevention is the most important bird-proofing step. The non-stick cookware must be removed from the household if there is a bird in the house, or the kitchen must be off-limits to the bird during cooking.
- Open food containers. The parrot that lands on an open container of food (especially chocolate, avocado, alcohol, coffee, or any other food that is toxic to birds) is a parrot that may consume the toxic food. The fix is to keep all food containers closed, in the refrigerator, or in the pantry, and to keep the bird out of the kitchen.
- Ceiling fans. The ceiling fan that is on is a ceiling fan that can kill a bird that flies into it. The fix is to keep the ceiling fans off during the out-of-cage time.
Hazard 3: Other pets. The dog or cat in the same room as an out-of-cage bird is a hazard. The dog or cat that is well-behaved around the bird today may not be well-behaved around the bird tomorrow, and the predator-prey dynamic is hardwired. The fix is to keep the out-of-cage time in a room that is pet-free (or with a closed door to keep the pets out), and to never leave the bird unsupervised with another pet.
Hazard 4: Toxic plants. Many common houseplants are toxic to birds (the list is long — lilies, philodendrons, dieffenbachia, pothos, avocado plants, oleander, azalea, rhododendron, yew, and many others). The fix is to remove all toxic plants from the bird's room, and to verify the safety of any plants in the room.
Hazard 5: Open water containers. The open toilet, the open fish tank, the open vase, the open pot of water on the stove — all are drowning hazards for small birds. The fix is to keep the toilet lid closed, the fish tank covered (with a screen or a lid that the bird cannot fit through), the vases removed or covered, and the kitchen supervised.
Hazard 6: Small spaces. The bird that gets behind a piece of furniture, into a cabinet, into a vent, or into a small hole is a bird that is in danger. The fix is to block access to the small spaces, with cardboard, with furniture rearrangement, or with a more thoughtful use of the room.
Hazard 7: Ceiling-height hazards. The bird that lands on a curtain rod, on a ceiling fan (off), on a hanging light fixture, or on a high shelf is a bird that may be difficult to retrieve. The fix is to either retrieve the bird safely (with a perch or a recall) or to make the high areas inaccessible.
Hazard 8: The mirror. The bird that sees a mirror and perceives the reflection as another bird is a bird that may be distressed, may be aggressive toward the reflection, or may attempt to interact with the reflection in a way that is self-injurious. The fix is to cover mirrors during the out-of-cage time, or to keep the bird out of rooms with mirrors.
Hazard 9: Electrical cords. The bird that chews an electrical cord is a bird that can be electrocuted. The fix is to cover or remove electrical cords in the bird's room, or to use cord covers (the hard plastic covers available at hardware stores).
Hazard 10: Open flames. The candle, the fireplace, the wood stove — the bird that flies into an open flame is a bird that is severely burned or killed. The fix is to extinguish all open flames during the out-of-cage time.
The bird-proofing is a one-time setup, with periodic re-evaluation (every 6–12 months) to verify that the room is still safe. The bird-proofing is the foundation of the out-of-cage time.
The wing-clipping decision
The wing-clipping is the most controversial decision in the parrot-keeping world, and the decision depends on the individual bird, the individual household, and the risk tolerance. I want to present both sides of the decision, with the framework for thinking about the right choice for your specific situation.
The arguments for wing-clipping. A properly done wing-clip (clipping the primary flight feathers on one or both wings, so the bird can glide but cannot achieve sustained flight) is the most reliable way to prevent the escape out of an open door or window. The wing-clipped bird is the bird that can be retrieved from the floor, from a curtain, or from a low perch. The wing-clip is the safety net for the owner who is not 100% confident in the bird-proofing, in the recall, or in the household's risk profile. The wing-clip is also the safety net for the owner who has open windows, who has small children who may inadvertently let the bird out, or who has other pets that may chase the bird.
The arguments against wing-clipping. A wing-clip can be done poorly (clipping the wrong feathers, clipping too many feathers, clipping one wing more than the other), and a poorly done clip can produce a bird that is in an uncontrolled descent (which can produce injury), a bird that cannot glide to a safe landing (which can produce injury on impact), or a bird that is psychologically distressed (the bird that wants to fly and cannot). A wing-clip is not a substitute for training, for bird-proofing, or for supervision. A wing-clipped bird that is unsupervised in an unsafe room is a bird that is at risk. A wing-clip is also a one-time event that needs to be repeated every 6–12 months as the feathers molt and regrow.
The decision framework. The right decision for your specific situation depends on:
- The bird's training level. A bird with a strong recall is a bird that does not need a wing-clip for safety — the recall brings the bird back. A bird without a recall is a bird that needs the additional safety of a wing-clip.
- The household's bird-proofing. A household with a fully bird-proofed room is a household that does not need the additional safety of a wing-clip. A household with gaps in the bird-proofing is a household that benefits from the additional safety.
- The household's risk tolerance. Some owners can tolerate the small risk of escape and the consequences. Some owners cannot. The decision is personal.
- The bird's psychological response. Some birds tolerate the wing-clip well and adapt to the reduced flight. Some birds are psychologically distressed by the reduced flight, and the distress produces behavioral problems (feather destructive behavior, screaming, biting). The bird that is distressed by the wing-clip is a bird that should not be wing-clipped.
The right decision is a per-bird decision, made with full information, and revisited at every molt cycle. The owner who is uncertain should consult with an avian vet or an avian behavior consultant. The owner who decides to wing-clip should have the clip done by a qualified avian vet or an experienced bird groomer, with a proper trim that allows the bird to glide safely to the floor without crashing.
The recall requirement
The bird that is out of the cage is the bird that must be able to be retrieved. The retrieval is the recall. The recall is the safety behavior that allows the owner to bring the bird back to the cage, to bring the bird back to the perch, or to bring the bird to a safe location in an emergency.
The recall training is the same as the recall training I described in an earlier article — the bird learns that the recall cue (the name, the "come," the "here") predicts a high-value treat, the bird learns to fly to the owner on cue, and the bird is reinforced for the recall. The training takes 2–8 weeks, depending on the bird and the consistency of the training.
The bird that has a reliable recall is the bird that can be safely out of the cage, even in a partially bird-proofed room, because the owner can retrieve the bird at any time. The bird that does not have a reliable recall is the bird that should not be out of the cage in a room with open windows, open doors, or other escape risks.
The four mistakes that turn a free-flight session into a tragedy
Mistake 1: Skipping the bird-proofing. The single most common mistake. The owner brings the bird out of the cage in the living room, with the ceiling fan on, the kitchen door open, and the dog in the room. The bird flies into the ceiling fan, flies into the kitchen, or is chased by the dog. The owner is surprised. The owner did not think about the hazards. The fix is to bird-proof the room before the first out-of-cage session, and to re-bird-proof the room every 6–12 months.
Mistake 2: Leaving the bird unsupervised. The second most common mistake. The owner brings the bird out of the cage, the owner leaves the room "for just a few minutes" to take a phone call or to use the bathroom, and the bird escapes, gets into a hazardous situation, or is attacked by another pet. The fix is to never leave the bird unsupervised during the out-of-cage time. The supervision is the safety net.
Mistake 3: Bringing the bird into the kitchen during cooking. The third most common mistake. The owner brings the bird into the kitchen "to keep the bird company" while the owner is cooking, and the bird is exposed to the non-stick cookware fumes, the hot surfaces, or the open food containers. The bird is poisoned, burned, or exposed to a toxic food. The fix is to keep the kitchen off-limits to the bird during cooking, and to remove the non-stick cookware from the household if there is a bird in the house.
Mistake 4: Wing-clipping too aggressively. The fourth mistake, and the most preventable. The owner brings the bird to a groomer or a vet, the wing-clip is done too aggressively (too many feathers, the wrong feathers, both wings symmetrically), and the bird is in an uncontrolled descent the next time the bird tries to fly. The bird hits the floor hard, the bird hits a wall, the bird is injured. The fix is to have the wing-clip done by a qualified avian vet or an experienced bird groomer, with a proper trim that allows the bird to glide to the floor. The wing-clip should be the lightest clip that achieves the safety goal, and the clip should be re-evaluated at every molt cycle.
The species-specific notes
A few notes on the species-specific considerations for the out-of-cage time:
Small birds (budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, parrotlets). The out-of-cage time is typically in a small, well-bird-proofed room (a bathroom, a small bedroom). The small birds have smaller flight ranges, and the out-of-cage time can be more easily accommodated in a smaller space. The wing-clip is less commonly used for small birds, because the small birds are more easily retrieved with a perch or a small net.
Medium birds (conures, Quaker parrots, Pionus, Senegal parrots). The out-of-cage time is typically in a medium-sized room, with a play stand or a T-stand. The medium birds have a moderate flight range, and the out-of-cage time should be 3+ hours per day. The wing-clip is more commonly used for medium birds, because the medium birds are strong fliers and the escape risk is real.
Large birds (Amazons, African greys, cockatoos, macaws). The out-of-cage time is typically in a large room (a living room, a dedicated bird room), with a sturdy play stand or a large tree-style perch. The large birds have a large flight range, and the out-of-cage time should be 4+ hours per day. The wing-clip is more commonly used for large birds, because the large birds are very strong fliers and the escape risk is significant.
The species-specific considerations also include the social needs. The cockatoos, in particular, are highly social and require significant human interaction during the out-of-cage time. The macaws are also highly social and require significant interaction. The cockatiels, the conures, and the budgies are also social but can be entertained with toys and with other birds in the same room. The single bird that is out of the cage for the human interaction is the bird that has a different out-of-cage experience than the bird that is out of the cage for the environmental enrichment.
The bottom line
The out-of-cage time is not optional for a healthy parrot. The out-of-cage time is the foundation of the physical, cognitive, and emotional health of the bird. The right out-of-cage time is 2–4 hours per day, in a bird-proofed room, with a play stand, with toys and foraging opportunities, and with the owner present.
