The most common nutritional problem in companion animals is overfeeding. The most common cause of overfeeding is the owner's misunderstanding of the pet's actual calorie needs. The dog food bag says "feed 2 cups per day for a 30-pound dog." The owner feeds 2 cups per day, plus treats, plus table scraps, plus the food the dog steals from the cat's bowl. The dog gains weight. The owner is confused because they "followed the bag." The bag's recommendation is a starting point, not a precise prescription. The actual calorie need of the dog depends on the dog's weight, age, activity level, breed, and body condition, and the bag's recommendation is based on an "average" dog that may not match the actual dog in the household.

The RER formula: resting energy requirement

The first step in calorie calculation is the resting energy requirement (RER), which is the number of calories the pet would need if it did nothing but rest in a thermoneutral environment (neither too hot nor too cold). The RER is a function of body weight, and the formula is:

RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75

The 0.75 exponent reflects the metabolic scaling that applies to mammals: the metabolic rate scales with body weight to the 3/4 power, not linearly. A 10 kg dog does not have 10 times the metabolic rate of a 1 kg dog; it has roughly 5 times. The 0.75 exponent captures this.

The MER multipliers: maintenance energy requirement

The maintenance energy requirement (MER) is the actual daily calorie need of a pet that is at a healthy weight, in a thermoneutral environment, and engaging in normal activity. The MER is calculated by multiplying the RER by a factor that depends on the pet's life stage, activity level, and other factors.

Common MER multipliers for dogs:

  • Neutered adult, normal activity: 1.6 × RER
  • Intact adult, normal activity: 1.8 × RER
  • Active or working dog: 2.0 to 5.0 × RER (depending on the level of activity)
  • Inactive or obese-prone adult: 1.2 to 1.4 × RER
  • Puppy, under 4 months: 3.0 × RER
  • Puppy, 4 to 12 months: 2.0 × RER
  • Pregnant female, last third: 1.8 to 2.0 × RER (with appropriate nutrient adjustments)
  • Lactating female: 4.0 to 8.0 × RER (depending on litter size and stage of lactation)
  • Senior, normal activity: 1.4 to 1.6 × RER

Common MER multipliers for cats:

  • Neutered adult, normal activity: 1.2 to 1.4 × RER
  • Intact adult, normal activity: 1.4 to 1.6 × RER
  • Active adult: 1.4 to 1.8 × RER
  • Inactive adult or obese-prone adult: 1.0 to 1.2 × RER
  • Kitten, under 4 months: 2.5 to 3.0 × RER
  • Kitten, 4 to 12 months: 2.0 × RER
  • Pregnant or lactating queen: 1.6 to 4.0 × RER (depending on stage)

To use these multipliers, the owner multiplies the RER (from the table or calculated) by the appropriate multiplier. For example, a 10 kg neutered adult dog with normal activity has an RER of 394 and a MER of 394 × 1.6 = 630 kcal/day. A 4 kg neutered adult cat with normal activity has an RER of 198 and a MER of 198 × 1.4 = 277 kcal/day.

These are starting points. The actual calorie need of the individual pet may be 20 percent higher or lower than the calculated MER, depending on the pet's metabolism, activity level, and other factors. The MER is the starting point, and the body condition score is the way the owner knows whether to adjust the MER up or down.

The life-stage adjustments

The life stage of the pet is one of the most important factors in the calorie calculation.

Puppies and kittens have very high calorie needs because they are growing. A puppy that is fed the same amount as an adult dog of the same weight will not grow properly. The puppy needs 2 to 3 times the RER, depending on the age. The 8 week old puppy being weaned needs roughly 3 times the RER. The 6 month old puppy needs roughly 2 times the RER. The 12 month old puppy (or 18 to 24 months for large breeds) is approaching the adult MER.

Adults at maintenance have the multipliers above. The neutered adult is the most common, and the multiplier is 1.6 for dogs and 1.2 to 1.4 for cats. The intact adult is slightly higher. The active or working adult is significantly higher.

Seniors may have slightly lower calorie needs than younger adults, partly because of decreased activity and partly because of decreased muscle mass. The senior MER is often 1.4 to 1.6 for dogs and 1.2 for cats. The senior that is losing weight unintentionally (a common problem in senior cats, in particular) may need the MER increased.

Pregnant and lactating females have very high calorie needs, particularly in late gestation and during lactation. A lactating dog with a large litter may need 4 to 8 times the RER. The pregnant or lactating female should be fed a growth or performance formula, fed free-choice or in multiple meals per day, and monitored for weight loss.

The activity-level adjustments

The activity level of the pet is the second most important factor in the calorie calculation. The dog that spends 8 hours a day at doggy daycare and the dog that sleeps on the couch 22 hours a day have very different calorie needs, even if they are the same breed and weight.

Couch potato pets. The inactive pet needs 1.2 to 1.4 times the RER for dogs, 1.0 to 1.2 times the RER for cats. The owner of a couch potato pet often overfeeds because the bag's recommendation is based on an "average" pet with normal activity, and the average pet is more active than the couch potato.

Active pets. The active pet that runs, hikes, plays fetch, or works needs 1.8 to 2.5 times the RER for dogs, 1.4 to 1.8 times the RER for cats. The working dog (herding, hunting, agility, search and rescue) may need 3.0 to 5.0 times the RER during periods of intense work.

Variable activity. Many pets have variable activity — high on the weekend, low during the week, or seasonal variation. The owner of a variable-activity pet may need to adjust the calorie intake based on the season, or may use a fixed middle-ground amount and monitor the body condition.

The breed-specific adjustments

Some breeds have metabolic characteristics that affect their calorie needs.

Breeds prone to obesity (Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Pugs, Beagles, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds) have lower calorie needs than other breeds of the same weight. The Labrador Retriever in particular has a genetic variant in the POMC gene that affects satiety and metabolism, and Labradors are notoriously easy to overfeed.

Breeds prone to being thin (Sighthounds, German Shepherds, some terriers) have higher calorie needs than other breeds of the same weight. The Sighthound (Greyhound, Whippet, Saluki) has a lean body composition and a high metabolism, and may need 1.8 to 2.0 times the RER even when not actively working.

Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs, Saint Bernards) have lower calorie needs per kg of body weight than smaller breeds, and are prone to growth problems if overfed as puppies. The giant breed puppy should be fed to grow slowly, with the adult weight reached at 18 to 24 months, not at 12 months.

Toy breeds (Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese) have very high metabolic rates and may need 2.0 to 2.5 times the RER as adults, particularly if they are active. The toy breed that is fed the same amount as a larger dog of similar body weight may be underfed.

The body-condition score that should drive the adjustment

The body-condition score (BCS) is the most practical tool for adjusting the calorie calculation. The BCS is a 9-point scale (with 5 being ideal, 1 being emaciated, and 9 being obese) that the owner can use to assess the pet's body condition.

The owner who has been feeding the calculated MER for 4 to 8 weeks should re-evaluate the pet's BCS. If the BCS is 5 (ideal), the calculated MER is correct. If the BCS is above 5 (overweight), the MER should be reduced by 10 to 20 percent. If the BCS is below 5 (underweight), the MER should be increased by 10 to 20 percent.

The BCS assessment:

  • Ribs: should be easily felt with light pressure, but not seen. The visible ribs indicate underweight. The ribs that cannot be felt at all indicate overweight.
  • Waist: should be visible from above. The dog or cat that has a clear waist when viewed from above is at a healthy weight. The dog or cat that has no waist (the body is the same width from the chest to the hips) is overweight.
  • Abdominal tuck: should be visible from the side. The dog or cat that has a clear tuck (the abdomen is higher than the chest when viewed from the side) is at a healthy weight. The dog or cat that has no tuck (the abdomen is the same height as the chest, or lower) is overweight.

The owner who is uncertain about the BCS can ask the vet to assess it at the next wellness visit. The vet can also calculate the pet's ideal weight and the calorie need for that ideal weight.

The role of the food label

The food label provides the calorie content of the food (in kcal per cup, kcal per can, or kcal per kg). The owner who knows the food's calorie content and the pet's daily calorie need can calculate the amount to feed.

The example: a 10 kg neutered adult dog with normal activity needs 630 kcal/day. The dog food has 350 kcal per cup. The owner should feed 630 / 350 = 1.8 cups per day. The bag says "feed 2 to 2.5 cups per day for a 30-pound dog" (a 13.6 kg dog). The bag's recommendation is for a slightly larger dog, so the calculated 1.8 cups is consistent with the lower end of the bag's recommendation. The owner feeds 1.8 cups, plus treats, plus table scraps, plus the cat's stolen food, and the dog gains weight. The fix: subtract the treats and table scraps from the calculated daily amount, and stop the cat's food theft.

The treat calories count. The owner who feeds the calculated 1.8 cups of dog food and also gives 200 kcal of treats per day is effectively feeding 830 kcal/day, which is 32 percent over the calculated MER. The treats should be subtracted from the daily food amount, or the daily food amount should be reduced to account for the treats.

The role of the kitchen scale

The kitchen scale is the most accurate way to measure the food. The measuring cup is notoriously inaccurate — studies have shown that the variation between owners using the same measuring cup can be 30 percent or more. The owner who fills the cup generously is feeding 30 percent more than the owner who fills the cup level. The kitchen scale, used to weigh the food in grams, is accurate to within 1 percent.

The owner who is serious about the calorie calculation uses a kitchen scale. The owner who is not serious uses a measuring cup. The difference is significant.

The four mistakes

Mistake 1: Using the bag's recommendation without adjustment. The bag's recommendation is for an "average" pet. The actual pet is not average. The fix: calculate the MER using the formula, then adjust based on the BCS after 4 to 8 weeks.

Mistake 2: Not accounting for treats. The owner calculates the daily food amount based on the MER, then adds treats on top. The treats push the daily calorie intake over the MER. The fix: subtract the treats from the daily food amount. The treats should be no more than 10 percent of the daily calorie intake.

Mistake 3: Feeding "free choice" to a pet that needs portion control. The owner fills the bowl and lets the pet eat whenever it wants. The cat that is free-choice fed is often overfed. The dog that is free-choice fed is often overfed. The fix: measure the daily amount, divide it into 2 to 3 meals, and put the bowl down for 15 to 30 minutes. The pet that does not finish the food in 30 minutes does not get more until the next meal.

Mistake 4: Not re-evaluating the BCS regularly. The owner calculates the MER once, feeds the calculated amount, and never re-evaluates. The pet's activity level changes, the pet ages, the pet's metabolism changes, and the calculated amount becomes incorrect. The fix: re-evaluate the BCS every 4 to 8 weeks, and adjust the daily amount based on the BCS. The pet that is gaining weight needs 10 to 20 percent less. The pet that is losing weight needs 10 to 20 percent more.

Closing the loop

The calorie calculation is not a one-time exercise. It is a starting point that the owner uses and then adjusts based on the pet's body condition. The owner who calculates the MER, who uses a kitchen scale to measure the food, who accounts for the treats, who feeds portion-controlled meals, and who re-evaluates the BCS every 4 to 8 weeks, will have a pet that maintains a healthy weight throughout its life. The owner who uses the bag's recommendation without adjustment, who feeds treats on top of the calculated amount, who free-choice feeds, and who never re-evaluates, will have a pet that gains weight and develops the secondary health problems of obesity. The food is the same. The difference is the calculation and the monitoring.
