Bathing and misting parrots

Most companion parrots are dehydrated. Not the kind of dehydration that sends a bird to the emergency clinic, but the chronic, subclinical kind that shows up as dry, brittle plumage, excessive preening, dusty or flaky skin, and a generally unkempt appearance. The parrots that look "dusty" to their owners are not dusty — they are dehydrated, and the white powder that comes off on the owner's hand is the bird's natural feather dust, which builds up because the feathers are not being regularly bathed. The owners of such birds often think the dusting is normal. It is normal in the sense that all parrots produce some feather dust, but the amount is dramatically reduced in a bird that is bathed regularly. The bird that is bathed two or three times a week has glossy, well-preened feathers and very little visible dust. The bird that is never bathed has dry feathers and a perpetual snowglobe effect in the home.

This article is the practical view of parrot bathing and misting, written for the owner who has a parrot and is not sure how to keep the bird clean without stressing it. We will go through why most pet parrots are under-hydrated, the species-specific preferences (because African Greys, cockatoos, Amazons, macaws, conures, budgies, and cockatiels all have different preferences), the three main bathing methods (shower, mist, and bath bowl), the water temperature, the drying protocol, the role of bathing in feather condition and behavior, the role of humidity in the home, and the four mistakes that turn a helpful routine into a chronic health or trust problem.

Why most pet parrots are under-hydrated

In the wild, parrots bathe almost daily. The rainforest canopy where most parrot species evolved is a high-humidity environment with frequent rain. The parrots that live in drier habitats (some Australian species, for example) still find water in tree hollows, dew on leaves, and seasonal rains. The captive bird that lives in a centrally heated, air-conditioned home with relative humidity of 20 to 30 percent is living in a desert by the bird's evolutionary standards. The humidity is too low, the feathers are drying out, and the bird is not getting the regular bathing that its wild counterparts get.

The effects of chronic under-hydration include:

  • Dry, brittle feathers that break easily and look dull
  • Excessive preening as the bird tries to redistribute what little preen oil it has
  • Flaky or powdery skin, particularly visible in cockatoos and African Greys
  • Increased feather destructive behavior (picking, barbering) as the bird tries to relieve the discomfort of dry skin
  • Static electricity in the plumage, which can be uncomfortable
  • Increased respiratory irritation from the dry air

The fix is regular bathing. The frequency depends on the species, the home environment, and the bird's preference, but most parrots benefit from 2 to 4 baths per week. The bird that is bathed regularly has a dramatically different plumage than the bird that is bathed occasionally.

The species-specific preferences

Different species have different preferences, and the owner who knows the species can tailor the bathing routine accordingly.

African Greys. Highly intelligent, often anxious about new experiences, and frequently reluctant to bathe. Many African Greys will not voluntarily enter a bath bowl. They often prefer a gentle mist from a spray bottle held at a distance, with the mist falling on them like rain. The owner who tries to put an African Grey in a shower may find that the bird is terrified. The fix: start with a fine mist at a distance, gradually decrease the distance, and let the bird discover that the mist is pleasant. Some African Greys eventually accept a shower; many never do. The mist is fine.

Cockatoos. Most cockatoos love water. They will bathe enthusiastically in a bowl, under a shower, in a sink, in a bathtub — anywhere water is available. The Moluccan and Umbrella cockatoos in particular seem to have an almost obsessive relationship with water. The owner of a cockatoo should provide daily bathing opportunities, ideally in the form of a large bowl that the bird can climb into and splash around in. The cockatoo that is not bathed regularly often develops feather-destructive behavior.

Amazons. Variable. Some Amazons love to bathe, others are more reserved. The double yellow-headed, yellow-naped, and blue-fronted Amazons tend to be enthusiastic bathers. The lilac-crowned and white-fronted Amazons can be more reserved. The owner should offer a bath bowl and see what the bird does. A mist is also usually well-accepted.

Macaws. Most macaws love water. The large macaws (scarlet, blue-and-gold, green-winged) will bathe enthusiastically in a large bowl, under a shower, or in a bathtub. The mini macaws (severe, Hahn's, noble) also usually enjoy bathing. The owner should provide a large enough bowl that the macaw can sit in it comfortably.

Conures. Most conures love water and will bathe energetically in a bowl. The green-cheeked, sun, jenday, and blue-crowned conures are particularly enthusiastic bathers. The owner should provide daily bathing opportunities.

Budgies (parakeets). Budgies love water and will bathe enthusiastically in a shallow dish or under a gentle mist. Some budgies will roll on wet leaves if given the opportunity. The owner should provide a shallow bath dish (a flat ceramic dish or a small plastic tray) and observe the bird's preference.

Cockatiels. Most cockatiels love water. They will bathe in a shallow dish or under a gentle mist. The cockatiel that is bathing will often spread its wings and tail, lower its head, and rotate in the water to wet as much plumage as possible. The owner should provide a daily bath.

Quaker parrots, Indian ringnecks, Senegal parrots, and other "medium" parrots. Variable, but most will accept a bowl or a mist. The owner should offer and observe.

The key principle: offer the bathing opportunity, observe the bird's preference, and follow the bird's lead. The bird that is forced into a bathing method it does not like is a bird that develops a fear of the owner. The bird that is allowed to choose is a bird that enjoys the bath.

The three main bathing methods

Method 1: The bath bowl. A shallow dish (ceramic, glass, or stainless steel; not plastic, which can be chewed and ingested) large enough for the bird to sit in or next to and splash around. The water should be room temperature or slightly warm. The dish is placed in the cage, on a play stand, or on a countertop, depending on the bird's location at the time of the bath. The bird decides whether to enter the dish. Most parrots that like to bathe will discover the dish within minutes and will splash enthusiastically. The bath bowl is the most natural method and the one that most parrots prefer.

The bath bowl is changed and cleaned after every use. The bird's bath water becomes contaminated with feather dust, droppings, food particles, and preen oil. A dirty bath bowl is a bacterial hazard.

Method 2: The mist. A clean spray bottle (not the kind that has been used for any chemicals; buy a new one labelled for the bird) filled with room-temperature water. The mist is applied from a distance of about 30 to 60 cm, with the bottle held above the bird so the mist falls on the bird like gentle rain. The mist should be fine, not a stream. The owner sprays the bird's back, wings, and tail, avoiding the face (most birds do not like water on the face). The bird that enjoys the mist will fluff up its feathers, spread its wings, and rotate to expose different parts of the body. The bird that is afraid will try to escape, vocalize, or bite. The owner should stop immediately if the bird shows fear and try a different method.

The mist is particularly useful for species that are reluctant to enter a bath bowl (African Greys being the classic example) and for birds that are being introduced to bathing for the first time.

Method 3: The shower. Many parrots can be trained to shower with their owner. The bird is brought into the shower on a shower perch, a portable stand, or the owner's hand. The shower is set to a gentle, lukewarm flow (not hot, not cold, not a direct stream). The bird is positioned so that the water falls on its back and wings, not its face. The bird that enjoys the shower will spread its wings, fluff up, and vocalize. The bird that is afraid will struggle, vocalize in distress, or try to escape. The owner should introduce the shower gradually, starting with a brief exposure and increasing as the bird becomes comfortable.

The shower is the most efficient method for large birds (macaws, cockatoos) and for birds that are bonded to their owner. The shower is also a good bonding activity.

The water temperature for all three methods: room temperature to slightly warm (about 24 to 30°C, 75 to 86°F). The water should never be hot (risk of burns) or cold (the bird will be uncomfortable and may become stressed).

The drying protocol

After the bath, the bird should be allowed to dry in a warm, draft-free area. Most parrots will preen vigorously while drying, which redistributes the preen oil across the feathers and helps the feathers align properly. The owner should not use a hair dryer (the heat and noise are stressful, and the hair dryer may contain teflon or other chemicals that are toxic to birds when heated). A low setting on a quiet fan can be used to provide gentle air movement, but most birds dry perfectly well in the ambient air.

The drying time depends on the species, the humidity, and the size of the bird. A budgie may dry in 30 minutes; a macaw may take 2 to 3 hours. The bird should be fully dry before being returned to a cool or drafty area. A wet bird in a cold draft is at risk of chilling.

The bird should be allowed to preen undisturbed during the drying process. The preening is how the bird aligns the feathers and distributes the preen oil. The owner who interrupts the preening to "help" the bird dry is interfering with a natural and necessary process.

The role of bathing in feather condition and behavior

Bathing is not just about cleanliness. It has multiple downstream effects.

Feather condition. The feathers that are regularly bathed are more flexible, less brittle, and better aligned. The bird that is bathed regularly has a plumage that looks glossy and well-preened. The bird that is not bathed has dry, dull, and often broken feathers. The difference is dramatic and obvious to anyone who has seen both.

Preen oil distribution. Parrots have a preen gland at the base of the tail that produces a waxy oil. The bird applies this oil to the feathers during preening. The oil conditions the feathers, makes them water-resistant, and provides some antimicrobial protection. A well-hydrated bird produces better preen oil. A dehydrated bird produces less effective preen oil. The bathing-and-drying cycle encourages vigorous preening, which redistributes the oil across the plumage.

Skin health. The skin under the feathers is also affected. The well-bathed bird has hydrated, healthy skin. The dehydrated bird has dry, flaky, and sometimes irritated skin. The skin irritation is one of the drivers of feather-destructive behavior.

Behavior. Bathing is a natural behavior that many parrots find pleasurable. The bird that is bathed regularly is a bird that has a normal behavior outlet. The bird that is not bathed is a bird that may develop behavioural problems related to the unmet need to bathe, including excessive preening, feather picking, and general restlessness. The behavioural effects of regular bathing are often as dramatic as the cosmetic effects.

Respiratory health. Bathing helps keep the nostrils and the upper respiratory tract moist. The dehydrated bird has drier mucous membranes, which are more susceptible to irritation and infection. The well-bathed bird has better respiratory health.

The role of humidity in the home

Bathing is one component of the bird's hydration. The ambient humidity in the home is another. The owner who lives in a dry climate (or who uses central heating or air conditioning, both of which dry the air) should consider a humidifier for the room where the bird lives. The target humidity is 50 to 60 percent, which is much higher than the typical home humidity of 20 to 30 percent.

A hygrometer (humidity gauge) is a useful tool. The owner who can see the humidity level can adjust the humidifier accordingly. The bird that lives in a 50 percent humidity home is much more comfortable than the bird that lives in a 25 percent humidity home, even if both are bathed regularly.

The four mistakes

Mistake 1: Forcing the bird into a bathing method it does not like. The owner reads online that "all parrots love showers" and tries to put the African Grey in the shower. The African Grey panics, flutters, screams, and may injure itself. The owner has destroyed trust that took months to build. The fix: offer the bath bowl first, then the mist, then the shower, and let the bird choose. The bird's preference is the right method.

Mistake 2: Using water that is too hot or too cold. The owner uses hot shower water, thinking "warm is comfortable for me, so it's comfortable for the bird." The bird's skin is much thinner than human skin and burns at lower temperatures. The owner who uses hot water scalds the bird. The fix: room temperature to slightly warm water. Test the temperature on your wrist the way you would test a baby's bath water.

Mistake 3: Skipping the bath in winter. The owner thinks the bird will catch a cold if bathed in winter. The opposite is true: the centrally heated winter home is the driest environment, and the bird needs the bath most in winter. The bird does not catch a cold from being bathed; the bird catches a cold from being wet and in a cold draft. The fix: bath in winter, but make sure the bird dries in a warm, draft-free area.

Mistake 4: Using a hair dryer or other heated appliance to dry the bird. The hair dryer is too hot, too noisy, and may emit teflon fumes that are toxic to birds. The fix: allow the bird to dry naturally in a warm, draft-free area, or use a low-setting fan at a distance. The natural drying is the safe drying.

Closing the loop

Most pet parrots are chronically under-hydrated because their home environment is much drier than their evolutionary environment, and because their owners are not sure how to bathe them. The fix is simple: provide a bath bowl, a mist, or a shower 2 to 4 times per week, in a method the bird accepts, at room temperature water, and let the bird dry in a warm area. The bird that is bathed regularly has better feathers, better skin, better behavior, and better respiratory health. The owner who follows the protocol and who avoids the four mistakes will have a bird that looks dramatically better and behaves better. The owner who forces the bird into a method it dislikes, who uses water that is too hot or too cold, who skips the bath in winter, or who uses a hair dryer, will have a stressed bird and a worse plumage. The water is the same. The difference is the protocol.
