Stuck shed in geckos: how to help safely

The shedding process in geckos, in brief

The dorsal spines (the crested gecko, the gargoyle gecko, the chahoua gecko, and the other species with the dorsal spines). The fifth most common location. The retained shed on the dorsal spines is associated with the spine constriction, the spine damage, and the chronic skin irritation. The dorsal spines are often the first place the keeper notices the stuck shed, because the spines are visible.
The general body. The sixth most common location. The general body retention is most common in the dehydrated gecko, and the general body retention is the sign of a more severe shedding problem.
The safe intervention: the keeper's role
The safe intervention for the stuck shed is the intervention that the keeper can perform at home, and the safe intervention is the intervention that produces the best outcome.
The preparation: the sauna. The first and most important step. The enclosure should have the rough surfaces (the rocks, the branches, the bark) that the gecko can use to rub against during the shedding, and the rough surfaces should be placed in the area where the gecko is most likely to shed (typically the humid hide).
The monitoring. The monitoring is the fourth most important variable. The keeper should check the gecko daily for the signs of the impending shed (the dull coloration, the blue eyes) and should monitor the shedding closely.
