I want to be clear at the start: the rabbit is a strict herbivore, and the rabbit's digestive system is specifically adapted to a high-fiber, low-calorie, low-protein, low-fat diet of fresh grass and hay. The rabbit's teeth grow continuously (the rabbit's teeth grow 2–3 mm per week), and the rabbit's digestive system requires a constant flow of fiber to maintain the motility of the gut. The hay provides the fiber, the hay provides the chewing action that wears the teeth, and the hay provides the substrate for the gut microflora. The two main hay types: timothy and alfalfa

Alfalfa hay. The hay for young, growing rabbits and for specific adult rabbits with special needs. Alfalfa hay is a legume hay (Medicago sativa), with a shorter-strand fiber, a higher protein content (15–20% DM), a higher calcium content (1.2–1.5% DM), a similar fiber content (30% DM), and a higher calorie content (2.0–2.4 kcal per gram). The alfalfa hay has a nutrient profile that is appropriate for the rapid growth of the young rabbit, but the nutrient profile is too rich for the adult rabbit.
The alfalfa hay's higher protein and higher calcium are the issue for the adult rabbit. The high protein can contribute to obesity (the adult rabbit has a lower protein requirement than the young rabbit), and the high calcium can contribute to urinary tract issues (the rabbit excretes the excess calcium through the urinary tract, and the high calcium in the urine can produce the calcium sludge or bladder stones that are common in adult rabbits). The alfalfa hay is the right hay for the young rabbit (under 6–7 months of age), but the alfalfa hay is the wrong hay for the adult rabbit.
The right hay for the right life stage
The right hay for the rabbit depends on the rabbit's life stage.
Young rabbits (under 6–7 months of age). The young rabbit is in a rapid growth phase, with the protein and the calcium requirements that support the bone and the muscle development. The young rabbit should be fed alfalfa hay (unlimited), with a small amount of timothy hay introduced at 3–4 months of age to allow the young rabbit to transition. The young rabbit should also be fed a small amount of alfalfa-based pellets (the young-rabbit pellets are higher in protein and calcium than the adult pellets).
Adult rabbits (7 months to 5 years of age). The adult rabbit is in a maintenance phase, with the protein and the calcium requirements that support the body condition. The adult rabbit should be fed timothy hay (unlimited), with the second cutting being the standard, and the first cutting being the best for dental health. The adult rabbit should be fed a small amount of timothy-based pellets (the adult pellets are lower in protein and calcium than the young-rabbit pellets). The adult rabbit should not be fed alfalfa hay (the high protein and high calcium are inappropriate for the adult).
Senior rabbits (over 5–6 years of age). The senior rabbit is in a phase of declining digestive efficiency, declining dental health, and (often) declining body weight. The senior rabbit should be fed timothy hay (unlimited), with the third cutting being preferred for the senior rabbit that is losing weight (the third cutting is more palatable and more calorie-dense). The senior rabbit with dental disease that cannot eat the long-strand hay may need to be transitioned to a chopped or a cubed hay, with the pellets and the fresh vegetables providing the bulk of the nutrition.
Pregnant or lactating does. The pregnant or lactating doe has the elevated protein and calcium requirements that support the pregnancy and the milk production. The pregnant or lactating doe should be fed alfalfa hay (unlimited), with a small amount of timothy hay, and with a high-quality alfalfa-based pellet. The transition back to timothy hay should occur at the time of weaning.
Rabbits with specific health conditions. The rabbit with chronic kidney disease should be fed a lower-calcium hay (timothy, not alfalfa). The rabbit with urinary tract issues (calcium sludge, bladder stones) should be fed a lower-calcium hay (timothy) and should be transitioned off alfalfa. The rabbit with dental disease may need to be fed a chopped or cubed hay, and may need a higher proportion of pellets and fresh vegetables to maintain the weight.
The quantity: unlimited is the right answer
The right quantity of hay for the adult rabbit is unlimited. The rabbit should have access to fresh hay 24/7, with the hay refreshed daily, and with the hay provided in a hay rack, a hay bin, or directly in the litter box (many rabbits like to eat hay while they are in the litter box, and the hay-in-litter-box arrangement supports both the hay consumption and the litter box training).
The unlimited hay is not a "filler." The unlimited hay is the primary nutrient source, and the unlimited hay provides:
- The fiber for the digestive health. The fiber maintains the gut motility, supports the gut microflora, and prevents the GI stasis that is the most common emergency in the rabbit.
- The chewing action for the dental health. The chewing of the long-strand hay wears the teeth at a rate that matches the tooth growth, and the chewing prevents the dental disease (the molar spurs, the malocclusion, the dental abscess) that is the second most common health problem in the rabbit.
- The low-calorie nutrition for the weight management. The hay is low in calories and high in fiber, and the hay supports the weight management of the adult rabbit that is at risk of obesity.
The rabbit that is fed unlimited hay is a rabbit that is, in most cases, a rabbit that maintains a healthy weight, a healthy digestion, and a healthy dental system. The rabbit that is fed a restricted amount of hay is a rabbit that is, in most cases, a rabbit that develops one or more of the hay-deficiency problems (obesity, dental disease, GI stasis).
The pellets are the supplement, not the primary food. The adult rabbit should be fed 1/4 cup of timothy-based pellets per 5 lbs of body weight per day, and the pellets should not be the primary source of nutrition. The pellets are calorie-dense and protein-dense, and the pellets can produce the obesity and the digestive problems that the hay prevents.
The storage and the freshness
The hay is a fresh product, and the hay loses its nutritional value and its palatability over time. The right storage of the hay:
- Store in a cool, dry, dark place. The hay should be stored in a location that is not exposed to direct sunlight, that is not exposed to moisture, and that is at a stable temperature (not a hot attic, not a damp basement). The sunlight degrades the vitamin content, the moisture produces mold, and the temperature extremes degrade the freshness.

The four mistakes that produce dental disease or obesity in the pet rabbit
Mistake 1: Feeding alfalfa hay to an adult rabbit. The most common mistake.
