Indoor cat enrichment: vertical space design
The indoor cat that has no vertical space is the cat that is living a flat life. The flat life is, for a cat whose biology is built for climbing, jumping, perching, and surveying territory from a height, an impoverished life — and the chronic deprivation produces the behavioral and physical problems that bring owners to my consulting practice. The cat that has appropriate vertical space is the cat that is engaging in the natural climbing and perching behaviors, that has the cognitive stimulation of an enriched environment, that has the social space to retreat from a conflict in a multi-cat household, and that is the cat that is healthier, more confident, and more cat-like. The vertical space is not optional. The vertical space is the foundation.
This article is going to walk you through the practical design of vertical space for indoor cats — why the vertical space matters, the three levels every multi-cat household needs, the materials and the construction considerations, the safety requirements, the placement strategy, and the four mistakes that turn a vertical space plan into a structural failure (or, worse, an injury). I am a feline behavior consultant, and the vertical space is one of the most common interventions I recommend in the households I work with. The vertical space is the intervention that produces the most visible improvement in the cat's behavior, the cat's confidence, and the cat-owner relationship.
I want to be clear at the start: the vertical space is not just a tall cat tree. The vertical space is a system — a connected network of vertical surfaces, perches, platforms, and pathways that the cat can use to navigate the three-dimensional space of the home. The tall cat tree in the corner of the living room is the start. The connected system is the goal.
Why vertical space matters, in four functions
The vertical space is not just a fun addition to the home. The vertical space is a biological need, and the cat that is provided with the appropriate vertical space is the cat whose biology is being met. The four functions of the vertical space are:
Function 1: Safety and retreat. The cat that is high is the cat that is safe. In the natural environment, the cat that is on a high perch is the cat that is out of reach of predators, is in a position to survey the environment, and has the time to assess threats before responding. The indoor cat that is in a multi-cat household or a household with a dog, with a small child, or with frequent visitors is the cat that benefits from the high perch as a retreat. The high perch is the cat's "safe place," and the safe place is the cat's psychological anchor in a complex environment.
Function 2: Survey and monitoring. The cat that is high is the cat that can see the environment. The indoor environment is dynamic (people moving, other pets moving, doors opening and closing, the cat's resources being accessed), and the cat that is high is the cat that can monitor the environment without being in the middle of it. The monitoring is part of the cat's territorial behavior, and the monitoring is the cat's way of maintaining situational awareness.
Function 3: Cognitive enrichment. The cat that is climbing, jumping, balancing, and navigating the three-dimensional space is the cat that is cognitively engaged. The cognitive engagement is the difference between a cat that is bored (and that is expressing the boredom through over-grooming, late-night vocalization, or inter-cat aggression) and a cat that is engaged (and that is using the cognitive energy on the natural behaviors). The vertical space is one of the most effective cognitive enrichment tools available to the indoor cat owner.
Function 4: Exercise. The cat that is jumping from perch to perch is the cat that is exercising. The exercise is critical for the cat's physical health (maintaining muscle tone, maintaining a healthy body weight, maintaining joint mobility), and the exercise is the natural behavior that the indoor cat is most likely to be missing. The vertical space is the indoor cat's "gym," and the cat that uses the gym is the cat that is in better physical condition.
The three levels every multi-cat household needs
The vertical space in a multi-cat household should be designed around three levels, with the levels corresponding to the three social functions that the vertical space provides.
Level 1: The "any cat" level. A low level (2–3 feet off the ground), with one or more perches, accessible to any cat in the household. The level is the entry point, the level that the senior cat or the cat with arthritis can still reach, and the level that is always available even when the higher levels are contested. The level is the foundation of the vertical space, and the level should be present in every room that the cats use.
Level 2: The "preferred" level. A medium level (4–6 feet off the ground), with a sturdy cat tree or a wall-mounted shelf, in a prominent location. The level is the level that most cats use most of the time, and the level is the level that is contested in a multi-cat household. The level should be wide enough to accommodate the cat's full body (a typical cat is 18–24 inches long when resting), with enough space for the cat to turn around and to lie down.
Level 3: The "escape" level. A high level (6+ feet off the ground), with a high cat tree, a top-of-cabinet perch, or a ceiling-height climbing structure. The level is the level that the cat uses as a retreat, the level that the cat uses to escape a conflict, and the level that the cat uses when the cat wants to be alone. The level should be accessible via the cat tree or via a wall-mounted climbing path, and the level should be high enough that the cat feels safe but not so high that the cat is at risk of injury on a fall.
The three levels work together as a system. The cat can move vertically through the space (from the floor to Level 1 to Level 2 to Level 3), and the cat can move horizontally across the space (from one perch to another, from one wall-mounted shelf to another). The system is what produces the cognitive engagement, the exercise, and the social space that the multi-cat household needs.
The materials and the construction considerations
The vertical space is built from cat trees, wall-mounted shelves, and ceiling-mounted climbing structures. The materials and the construction matter, because the vertical space must be stable, must be safe, and must be designed for the specific cat and the specific household.
The cat tree. The cat tree is the most common vertical space element, and the cat tree that is right for the cat depends on the cat's size, the cat's age, and the cat's preferences. The minimum requirements for a quality cat tree:
- A heavy base. A cat tree that is top-heavy is a cat tree that tips when the cat jumps to the top. The base should be at least 1.5–2x the width of the tallest column, and the base should be heavy enough that an adult human cannot tip the tree by pushing at the top.
- Sturdy posts. The posts should be made of solid wood (not particleboard, not cardboard), and the posts should be at least 4 inches in diameter for medium to large cats. Sisal-wrapped posts are the most popular, and the sisal is a good scratching surface.
- Stable platforms. The platforms should be wide enough for the cat to rest comfortably, and the platforms should be secured to the posts with metal hardware (not staples, not glue).
- A high perch. A cat tree should have at least one perch that is 5+ feet off the ground, for the cat to use as the highest point.
The cat tree should be in a prominent location (the living room, the family room, the room where the owner spends the most time), not in a back room. The cat that uses the cat tree is the cat that is in the social center of the household.
The wall-mounted shelves. The wall-mounted shelves are an alternative or a complement to the cat tree, and the wall-mounted shelves are particularly useful in small spaces (where the floor space for a cat tree is limited). The shelves are mounted to the wall studs (not to the drywall alone, which cannot support the cat's weight), and the shelves are connected to each other to form a climbing path. The shelves are typically spaced 18–24 inches apart vertically (the cat can jump from one to the next), and the shelves are wide enough for the cat to rest (12–18 inches deep).
The wall-mounted shelves are more expensive to install (the materials and the labor are significant), but the shelves are more space-efficient, more aesthetically pleasing (the shelves can be designed to look like floating shelves in a modern home), and more durable (the wall mounting is more stable than the free-standing cat tree). The shelves are appropriate for owners who are willing to invest in the installation.
The ceiling-mounted climbing structures. The ceiling-mounted structures (climbing nets, ceiling-height posts, hanging perches) are the most advanced vertical space element, and the structures are typically used in the most dedicated cat households. The structures are mounted to the ceiling joists, and the structures are connected to the wall-mounted shelves or to the cat trees to form a comprehensive vertical system. The structures are appropriate for the multi-cat household that has the space, the budget, and the commitment to the most enriched environment.
The safety requirements
The vertical space must be safe. The cat that is falling from a height is a cat that is at risk of injury, and the safe design prevents the most common accidents.
The fall height. The cat can survive falls from significant heights (the "cat righting reflex" allows the cat to rotate in mid-air and land on the feet), but the fall is not without risk. The cat that falls from a height onto a hard surface (tile, hardwood, concrete) is a cat that can be injured, even with the righting reflex. The safe fall height is a height that allows the cat to land safely, with the cat's normal climbing pattern. The cat tree should be tall enough to be useful (5+ feet for the top perch) but not so tall that a fall from the top is dangerous (10+ feet to a hard surface is risky).
The padding. The floor under the cat tree should be padded (a rug, a foam mat, a carpet remnant) to provide a softer landing in case of a fall. The padding is especially important for the senior cat or the cat with arthritis, who may misjudge a jump and fall.
The stability. The cat tree should be stable when the cat jumps to the top. The cat tree that tips when the cat jumps is a cat tree that is a hazard. The cat tree that wobbles when the cat jumps is a cat tree that the cat will not use, and the cat tree that the cat does not use is a wasted investment.
The no-trap spots. The cat that gets into a no-trap spot (a space that the cat can climb into but cannot climb out of, like the back of a refrigerator or the inside of a cabinet) is a cat that is in danger. The vertical space should not include no-trap spots, or the no-trap spots should be blocked off.
The electrical and other hazards. The cat that climbs the wall-mounted shelf and chews the electrical cord is a cat that can be electrocuted. The wall-mounted shelves should not be placed near electrical outlets, near cords, or near other hazards. The cat that climbs to the top of the cat tree and chews the curtain is a cat that can pull the curtain down (and the curtain rod) on top of itself. The cat tree should be placed away from the curtains, the blinds, and the hanging items.
The placement strategy
The placement of the vertical space is as important as the design of the vertical space. The cat tree in the wrong location is a cat tree the cat will not use.
Place the cat tree in the social center of the household. The cat that uses the cat tree is the cat that is in the social center — the living room, the family room, the room where the owner spends the most time. The cat tree in the back room is a cat tree the cat will use occasionally. The cat tree in the social center is a cat tree the cat will use daily.
Place the cat tree near a window. The cat that is on the cat tree and that can see the window is a cat that has the additional enrichment of the outdoor view (birds, squirrels, leaves, weather changes). The window perch is a separate element (often a window-mounted shelf or a hammock), and the cat tree near the window is the foundation.
Place the wall-mounted shelves in a path that the cat will use. The wall-mounted shelves should form a path that the cat can use to navigate from one room to another (e.g., from the living room to the bedroom, along the hallway), or a path that allows the cat to survey the room from a height. The shelves that are placed in a corner where the cat does not go are the shelves the cat will not use.
Place the vertical space away from the hazards. The vertical space should not be near the kitchen (the non-stick cookware fumes are a hazard for cats as well as for birds), near the open door (the escape risk), near the window that is regularly opened (the escape risk), or near the ceiling fan (the strike risk).
The four mistakes that turn a vertical space plan into a structural failure
Mistake 1: Buying a cheap cat tree. The most common mistake. The owner buys a cheap cat tree from a discount store, the cat tree is wobbly, the cat tree has particleboard posts, the cat tree has staples instead of metal hardware, and the cat tree is unstable. The cat refuses to use the cat tree, or the cat uses the cat tree once and the cat tree tips. The fix is to invest in a quality cat tree, with a heavy base, with solid wood posts, with metal hardware, and with a warranty. A good cat tree is a long-term investment.
Mistake 2: Placing the cat tree in the wrong location. The second most common mistake. The owner places the cat tree in the back room, in the corner, in the basement, or in the garage. The cat does not use the cat tree. The fix is to place the cat tree in the social center of the household, near a window, in a location where the cat can see the activity of the household.
Mistake 3: Not providing enough vertical space in a multi-cat household. The third most common mistake. The owner provides one cat tree for three cats, and the cat tree is contested. The dominant cat claims the highest perch, and the subordinate cats are displaced to the lower perches or to the floor. The subordinate cats are still vertical-deprived, and the inter-cat tension is not addressed. The fix is to provide multiple vertical space options — multiple cat trees, multiple wall-mounted shelves, multiple window perches — distributed throughout the home, in different locations, accessible to all cats.
Mistake 4: Forgetting the senior cat. The fourth mistake, and the most common in multi-cat households with cats of different ages. The vertical space is designed for the young, agile cat, and the senior cat cannot reach the high perches. The senior cat is left on the floor, the senior cat is at risk of being "bullied" by the younger cats, and the senior cat's quality of life is reduced. The fix is to provide ramps or steps to the lower perches, and to provide multiple lower perches (Level 1 in the three-level system) that the senior cat can reach easily.
The bottom line
The vertical space is the foundation of the indoor cat's physical, cognitive, and emotional health. The right vertical space is a connected system — multiple levels, multiple locations, multiple materials, designed for the specific cat and the specific household. The right vertical space is stable, safe, and placed in the social center of the home.
The cat that has the vertical space is the cat that is engaging in natural behaviors, that is cognitively stimulated, that is physically exercised, and that has the social space to navigate a multi-cat household with confidence. The cat that does not have the vertical space is the cat that is living a flat life, and the flat life is the life that produces the behavioral and physical problems that bring owners to my consulting practice.
The three levels — the "any cat" level, the "preferred" level, and the "escape" level — are the framework for the multi-cat household. The owner who does not is the owner who has a cat that is bored, that is stressed, that is at risk. The difference is the vertical space. The vertical space is the framework above. The framework, applied with thought, is the right preparation.
