Every marine aquarium hobbyist hits the same wall at some point. You walk into a fish store, you see a juvenile powder blue tang — two inches long, vivid blue, yellow tail, black markings — and you think: I can keep that. The store has it in a 40-gallon tank. You have a 75-gallon at home. You have a protein skimmer, live rock, decent lighting. What could go wrong? The answer, in most cases, is everything. The fish arrives healthy. It eats well. It grows fast. By month eight it is five inches long. By month eighteen it is seven inches. By month twenty-four it has either killed itself on the rockwork, broken down your filtration, infected every other fish with marine ich, or simply wasted away from a chronic immune collapse that no amount of medication fixes.
The "tank-buster" label is a hobbyist term, not a scientific one, and it covers a wide range of species that share a few common traits: they get very large, they are highly active swimmers, they have specific dietary or environmental needs that are difficult to meet in a closed system, or they are simply too delicate to survive the typical hobbyist's mistake rate. The category includes surgeonfish (tangs, unicornfish, bristletooths), large angelfish, some butterflyfish, groupers, large wrasses, morays, and a few oddballs like the Platax orbicularis or the triggerfish. Not all of them are impossible to keep. Some of them genuinely thrive in well-designed systems. The problem is that most hobbyists do not have those systems, and most fish stores do not tell you that.
This article is meant to be the practical reality check. We will go through the categories, identify which species are actually appropriate for a home aquarium, identify which species should be left in the ocean, look at the tank size and system requirements, and finish with the four mistakes I see most often in the failed-tank-buster cases.
What "hard to keep" actually means in marine fish
The term "tank-buster" conflates three different problems, and the distinction matters because the solutions are different.
Size problem. The fish simply gets too large for the tank. This is the simplest case. A 12-inch adult cannot live in a 75-gallon tank long-term. You either upgrade the tank, you rehome the fish, or the fish dies. There is no husbandry trick that gets around this. The fish will grow to its genetic size regardless of tank size, and growth in a too-small tank produces skeletal deformities, muscle wasting, and chronic stress that suppresses the immune system.
Activity problem. The fish needs more swimming space than the tank provides, even if the tank is technically large enough. Surgeonfish in particular are open-ocean swimmers that patrol several metres of reef face per minute in the wild. A six-foot tank is not the same as a six-metre patch of reef, and the chronic frustration of being unable to perform normal behaviour shows up as aggression toward tankmates, refusal to eat, and increased susceptibility to marine ich.
Husbandry problem. The fish has a specific dietary or environmental requirement that is difficult to meet. The Moorish idol, for example, is famous for refusing prepared food in captivity and slowly starving. Many butterflyfish are obligate corallivores that need live coral polyps to thrive. Some tangs require constant grazing on filamentous algae that a typical reef tank cannot sustain. These fish can live for years in a perfectly sized tank if the husbandry is right, but the husbandry is very difficult.
A fish that is "hard to keep" is usually hard for two or three of these reasons simultaneously. The powder blue tang is large (size), active (activity), and ich-prone in captivity (husbandry). The Moorish idol is small (no size problem) but almost impossible to feed (severe husbandry problem). The Sohal tang is medium-sized but extremely aggressive (behaviour problem, which we will treat as a fourth category).
The surgeonfish (tang) family: a species-by-species view
The tang family is the most commonly purchased and the most commonly failed. Here is what I tell people in the store.
Yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens): The starter tang. Gets to about 8 inches, needs at least a 75-gallon tank (preferably 100+), grazes on algae, generally peaceful, hardy once acclimated. Not a tank-buster. Good for intermediate hobbyists.
Powder blue tang (Acanthurus leucosternon): The classic tank-buster. Gets to 9 inches, needs 180+ gallons, extremely ich-prone, requires excellent water quality and high flow. Beautiful but difficult. Suitable only for experienced hobbyists with large established tanks. Most specimens die within 18 months in captivity.
Sohal tang (Acanthurus sohal): The aggressive tang. Gets to 16 inches, needs 240+ gallons, extremely aggressive toward conspecifics and similar-looking fish. Will dominate a tank. Best kept as the only tang in a large aggressive-species system.
Achilles tang (Acanthurus achilles): The delicate tang. Gets to 10 inches, needs 180+ gallons, very ich-prone, slow to acclimate, beautiful adult coloration. Not for beginners.
Kole tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus): The algae-grazer tang. Gets to 7 inches, needs 75+ gallons, peaceful, good algae control, hardy. Excellent intermediate choice. Not a tank-buster.
Gem tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum): The collector's tang. Same size and care as the yellow tang, but extremely expensive ($1,000+ per fish). Husbandry is the same.
Naso tang (Naso lituratus): The unicorn tang. Gets to 18 inches, needs 240+ gallons, very active swimmer, peaceful but needs space. A juvenile in a 75-gallon tank is a death sentence for the fish.
Chevron tang (Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis): The Hawaiian endemic. Similar to Kole but larger (10 inches) and more expensive. Needs 125+ gallons.
Regal blue tang (Paracanthurus hepatus, "Dory"): The Pixar tang. Gets to 12 inches, needs 180+ gallons, ich-prone, requires excellent water quality. Often sold at 2 inches in a 30-gallon tank at chain pet stores. Most of these fish die in the first year.
The pattern across all surgeonfish is consistent: large, active, ich-prone, and need pristine water quality with high flow and stable parameters. The fish that do well are the ones kept by hobbyists with mature systems, large tanks, and stable parameters. The fish that fail are the ones kept by hobbyists who bought them on impulse at two inches and tried to make a small new tank work.
The large angelfish: an even harder category
The angelfish family splits into two groups based on size. The smaller Centropyge and some Apolemichthys species stay under 6 inches and are appropriate for 75+ gallon tanks. The larger Pomacanthus, Holacanthus, and large Apolemichthys species get to 12 to 24 inches and need 180 to 300+ gallon tanks.
The "large angelfish" category includes:
- Queen angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris): 18 inches, 240+ gallons, can be aggressive, requires varied diet including sponge. Difficult.
- French angelfish (Pomacanthus paru): 18 inches, 240+ gallons, semi-aggressive, accepts prepared food better than most. Difficult but doable.
- Blue angelfish (Holacanthus bermudensis): Similar to Queen.
- Emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator): 14 inches, 180+ gallons, beautiful as juvenile but drab as adult, can be aggressive.
- Passer angelfish (Holacanthus passer): 14 inches, 180+ gallons, moderately aggressive.
These fish are not impossible to keep. They are possible, but they require a tank that most hobbyists do not have. A 240-gallon tank is a serious commitment of space, money, and time. The fish themselves cost $200 to $1,000 each. They live 15+ years. The decision to keep one is a 15-year decision.
The honest truth about large angelfish: most of the ones sold in the hobby are juveniles. They look nothing like the adults. The juvenile French angelfish is dark blue with bright yellow rings; the adult is mostly yellow with dark scale edges. The juvenile Emperor is dark blue with concentric white and electric blue rings; the adult is yellow with horizontal blue stripes and a black mask. Hobbyists buy the juveniles, raise them, and are disappointed or surprised by the transformation. The adults are not bad — they are just different, and they are very large.
Butterflyfish: the impossible category
Butterflyfish are the hardest category in marine fishkeeping. Most species are obligate corallivores or have extremely specific dietary requirements that are nearly impossible to meet in captivity. The few that are suitable for the home aquarium are mostly in the Chelmon, Forcipiger, and Hemitaurichthys genera.
- Copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus): The classic "eats aiptasia" fish. 8 inches, 100+ gallons, often refuses prepared food, frequently starves in captivity. Success rate is probably 30% in experienced hands. Many hobbyists use them as aiptasia control and then rehome them.
- Longnose butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus): 9 inches, 100+ gallons, more likely to accept prepared food than Copperband but still difficult.
- Pyramid butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis): 7 inches, 100+ gallons, zooplanktivore, accepts prepared food readily, schools, peaceful. The one butterflyfish I actually recommend.
- Raccoon butterflyfish (Chaetodon fasciatus): 8 inches, 100+ gallons, accepts prepared food, hardy. Decent choice.
- Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus): 7 inches but famous for refusing to eat in captivity. Do not buy.
If you want a butterflyfish, the Pyramid or the Raccoon is the right place to start. The Copperband and the Moorish idol are not for beginners and arguably not for anyone without a specific plan to keep them.
Groupers, triggers, and other large predators
This category is for the dedicated predator tank or the FOWLR (fish-only-with-live-rock) system.
- Panther grouper (Cromileptes altivelis): 28 inches, 300+ gallons, eats anything, grows fast, beautiful as juvenile. Not for the home aquarium.
- Miniatus grouper (Cephalopholis miniatus): 18 inches, 180+ gallons, eats any small tankmate, hardy.
- Clown triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum): 18 inches, 180+ gallons, extremely aggressive, beautiful.
- Niger triggerfish (Odonus niger): 18 inches, 180+ gallons, moderate aggression.
- Snowflake moray (Echidna nebulosa): 36 inches, 180+ gallons, eats crustaceans, accepts frozen food.
These are not "hard to keep" in the sense of being delicate. They are "hard to keep" in the sense of being large, aggressive, and prone to eat anything that fits in their mouth. A predator tank is a specific kind of system, and it is rewarding, but it is not what the average hobbyist pictures when they see a juvenile panther grouper in a 20-gallon tank at the store.
The system requirements for keeping the appropriate species
If you are going to keep a yellow tang or a Kole tang (the appropriate species for a 75 to 100-gallon tank), you need:
- Tank size: 75 gallons minimum, 100+ preferred. Length is more important than height. Tangs are horizontal swimmers.
- Filtration: A high-capacity protein skimmer, a large sump with a refugium, and a dedicated algae reactor or at least a piece of live rock with healthy coralline algae. Total water volume in the system should be at least 1.5x the display volume to account for the sump and refugium.
- Flow: High flow. Tangs come from reef faces with strong surge. Aim for 20 to 40x the display volume per hour in total turnover. This means a 75-gallon display wants 1,500 to 3,000 gallons per hour of total flow.
- Water quality: Stable. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate below 10 ppm (preferably below 5 for tangs), pH 8.1 to 8.4, salinity 1.024 to 1.026, temperature 76 to 78°F. Tangs do not tolerate nitrate swings.
- Diet: Varied. Marine algae (nori sheets, dried macroalgae), mysis shrimp, brine shrimp (enriched), high-quality prepared foods, and a constant supply of grazing material. The Kole tang in particular needs constant access to film algae.
- Quarantine: 4 to 6 weeks in a separate tank before introduction. Tangs are ich magnets, and a quarantined tang is a healthy tang.
The four mistakes
Mistake 1: Buying the juvenile in the small tank. Fish stores sell 2-inch powder blue tangs in 40-gallon systems because they look great and the store knows it. The customer buys the fish, takes it home, and discovers within 18 months that the fish needs a 180-gallon tank and pristine parameters. The result is a dead fish, a frustrated hobbyist, and a justified sense that marine fishkeeping is "impossible." It is not impossible. It just requires planning for the adult, not the juvenile.
Mistake 2: Mixing conspecifics or similar species without adequate space. Two yellow tangs in a 100-gallon tank will fight to the death. Two powder blue tangs in a 180-gallon tank will also fight. Tangs are territorial and most species should be kept one per tank, or in very large systems (300+ gallons) with adequate sight-line breaks. The Naso and the Yellow can sometimes coexist in 240+ gallon systems; the Powder Blue and the Achilles should never be mixed.
Mistake 3: Skipping quarantine. Tang ich is the number-one killer of marine fish. The fish arrives from the wholesale channel already stressed and already carrying a parasite load. A 4 to 6 week quarantine in a separate tank, with observation and prophylactic treatment if needed, dramatically increases survival. Most hobbyists skip this because they do not have a separate tank. The fish dies in the display. They buy another one. It dies too. The cycle continues.
Mistake 4: Treating the tank as a static system. Marine tanks are dynamic. Parameters drift, algae grows, fish grow, equipment fails. The hobbyist who does not test water weekly, who does not change 10 to 20 percent of the water every two weeks, who does not clean the skimmer, who does not inspect the fish daily, is the hobbyist whose fish die. The four-month check-in is not enough. The weekly water change is not optional. The daily observation is the difference between a healthy tank and a slow-motion crash.
Closing the loop
The "tank-buster" category is real, but it is not a single category. Some species are inappropriate for the home aquarium. Some species are appropriate for experienced hobbyists with the right system. The mistake is treating the label as if it applies equally to all of them. A yellow tang is not a powder blue tang is not a Moorish idol. The buyer who learns the difference before purchasing, and who builds the system around the adult size and the species-specific needs, will succeed. The buyer who buys the 2-inch juvenile on impulse in the 40-gallon store display will not. The fish always pays the price for that mistake.
