The rule works well for adult corn snakes feeding on appropriately sized adult mice or small rats. It is less reliable for hatchlings and juveniles, for two reasons. First, neonate corn snakes (7–12 grams at hatch) are at the lower limit of what pinky mice can sustain, and the gape-to-body ratio at this stage is different from the adult ratio. A typical 8-gram hatchling takes a 1–2 gram pinky comfortably; by the time the hatchling is 15–20 grams, it has usually moved to a 2–3 gram pinky or a small fuzzy. The prey item, when laid next to the snake, should be roughly the same width as the snake at its mid-body.

Frequency: every 5–7 days. A hatchling's metabolism is high, and the digestive system is small. Feeding every 4 days is fine for a slow-growing hatchling; feeding every 7 days is appropriate for a fast-growing one. Watch body condition rather than the calendar.

Body condition: the snake should be visibly round after a meal, with no visible spine, but should not have rolls of fat or a "puffy" appearance. The body should be roughly cylindrical, with a clear taper from mid-body to tail.

Common mistake at this stage: feeding prey that is too large, out of the mistaken belief that a bigger meal will accelerate growth. It will not. It will produce regurgitation, slow growth, and (in some cases) permanent damage to the digestive system or spine.

Stage 2: Juvenile (6–18 months, 30–80 grams).

Prey: fuzzy mice (3–5 grams) up to small hoppers (5–9 grams) and then larger hoppers (9–13 grams) as the snake grows. By 50 grams, most corn snakes are on hopper mice. By 80 grams, they are on small adult mice or large hoppers.

Frequency: every 7–10 days. A juvenile's metabolism is still elevated but slowing down relative to a hatchling. Every 7 days is appropriate for a juvenile that is on the thinner side; every 10 days is appropriate for one that is gaining well.

Body condition: similar to hatchling targets, but the snake should have slightly more visible muscle tone along the body. The "round but not puffy" rule still applies.

Common mistake at this stage: feeding too frequently. Juvenile corn snakes that are fed every 5 days are typically overfed, and the growth rate, while initially faster, levels off as the snake's metabolism adjusts. The end result is a snake that is at adult size at 18 months but is significantly overweight for its frame.

Stage 3: Subadult (18–30 months, 80–250 grams).

Prey: adult mice (13–25 grams) for snakes in the 80–150 gram range, small rats (30–60 grams) for snakes above 150 grams. The switch to rats is appropriate when the snake is reliably taking adult mice and is showing a preference for larger prey.

Frequency: every 10–14 days. A subadult corn snake's metabolism is approaching adult levels. Every 10 days is appropriate for a snake that needs to gain; every 14 days is appropriate for one that is at target.

Body condition: visible muscle tone, clear taper from mid-body to tail, no rolls of fat, no visible spine.

Common mistake at this stage: not making the switch to rats. A snake that is being kept on adult mice because the keeper is "more comfortable with mice" is missing the nutritional and digestive benefits of a rat-based diet. More on this below.

Stage 4: Adult (30 months–8 years, 250–900 grams).

Prey: small to medium rats (40–100 grams), depending on the snake's size and body condition. A typical adult corn snake weighing 400–600 grams takes a 50–80 gram rat every 14–21 days. A larger adult (700+ grams) may take a 100–120 gram rat.

Frequency: every 14–21 days. Adult corn snakes have relatively low metabolic rates. Overfeeding is the single most common husbandry mistake in adult corn snakes, and the consequences (fatty liver disease, shortened lifespan, reproductive problems in females) are real.

Body condition: the "ideal" body condition for an adult corn snake is one that is hard to describe in writing and easy to recognize in person. The snake has a visible mid-body taper, no rolls of fat, no visible spine (the spine should be palpable but not prominent), and good muscle tone. The body should be roughly cylindrical, with a slight taper from thickest point to tail.

Common mistake at this stage: overfeeding. Adult corn snakes do not need to eat weekly. They do not need to eat every 10 days. They do well on a 14–21 day feeding schedule, with a slightly longer interval in the cooler months if the snake shows a natural slowdown. Overfeeding produces an overweight snake with internal fat deposits, and the long-term health consequences are not visible until they are advanced.

Stage 5: Senior (8+ years).

Prey: similar to adult, with adjustments for body condition and metabolism. A senior corn snake may need slightly less food, slightly less frequently, and may benefit from smaller, more frequent meals rather than larger, less frequent ones, depending on the individual's digestive efficiency.

Frequency: every 21–28 days, with adjustments based on body condition.

Body condition: maintained at adult targets, with closer monitoring as the snake ages. Weight loss in a senior snake is a vet-visit signal.

Common mistake at this stage: underfeeding in the mistaken belief that "older snakes need less." They may need less, but they need enough to maintain body condition. A senior snake that is visibly losing weight is not "aging gracefully" — it is malnourished.

The switch from mice to rats: why it matters

The standard recommendation in modern corn snake husbandry is to make the switch from mice to rats sometime between 150 and 300 grams of body weight, typically in the 18–24 month range. The reasons are nutritional, not just size-related:

Fat composition. Rats have a more favorable fatty acid profile than mice for corn snakes. Specifically, rats have a higher ratio of unsaturated to saturated fats, and the unsaturated fats are higher in the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio that is appropriate for corn snake metabolism. Mice are higher in saturated fat relative to rats, and a long-term mouse-based diet is associated with a higher incidence of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) in corn snakes.

Caloric density. Rats are more calorie-dense than mice of equivalent width. A snake eating a 60-gram rat is getting roughly 180–220 kcal, while a snake eating a "comparable" mouse (which would have to be a 25-gram adult mouse) is getting only 70–90 kcal. The result is that a rat-based diet is more efficient — fewer meals, more complete nutrition per meal, less digestive stress over the snake's lifetime.

Prey variety. A varied diet is healthier than a single-prey-item diet, even within the rodent category. A corn snake that alternates between mice and rats (with rats being the primary food source and mice used occasionally for variety or for snakes that are transitioning) is getting a more complete nutritional profile than one that eats only mice.

Behavioral enrichment. Larger prey items require more hunting, more constriction, and longer handling time, which is closer to the natural feeding behavior of a corn snake. A snake that stalks, strikes, constricts, and consumes a rat over 10–15 minutes is engaging in more natural behavior than one that swallows an adult mouse in 3 minutes.

The mechanical challenge of the switch is the snake's prey preference. Corn snakes imprint on their early prey, and a snake that has been fed mice exclusively for 18 months may initially refuse rats. The transition is usually accomplished by:

  • Scent transfer: rubbing a rat with a mouse, or feeding a rat that has been in a bag with a mouse.
  • Sequential offering: offering a mouse, removing it before the snake strikes, then offering a rat immediately afterward.
  • Hunger manipulation: skipping a meal or two to increase the snake's feeding response, then offering a rat.
  • Prey size: starting with a smaller rat (a rat pup) that is closer to mouse-sized, and gradually increasing.

Most corn snakes will switch to rats within 2–4 feedings of the transition. A small minority of individuals will refuse rats indefinitely, and for those snakes, a continued mouse-based diet with careful portion control is acceptable.

The four common sizing mistakes

Mistake 1: Prey too large. A prey item that is significantly larger than the snake's body width (more than 1.5x) is at risk of causing regurgitation, which damages the esophageal lining, can produce a feeding aversion, and in some cases can produce a permanent narrowing of the esophagus. Regurgitation in a corn snake is not a "he'll be fine" event — it is a serious medical event that requires a 2-week food rest and a re-evaluation of the prey size at the next feeding.

The visible signal of prey too large: the snake strikes and immediately releases, or strikes and attempts to constrict but the prey is too big to wrap around. The snake may also strike and then abandon the prey, or attempt to swallow and fail partway through. If you see any of these patterns, the prey is too large. Reduce by 30–50% at the next feeding.

Mistake 2: Prey too small. A prey item that is significantly smaller than the snake's body width will be consumed quickly, will not produce a visible feeding response, and will not sustain the snake for the appropriate interval. A snake that is fed undersized prey will be perpetually hungry, will be more active (often interpreted as "exploratory" by the keeper, when it is actually "looking for food"), and will not grow at the appropriate rate. The fix is to increase the prey size to match the snake's body width, with a 10–20% margin.

Mistake 3: Inconsistent prey type. A snake that is fed a fuzzy one week, an adult mouse the next, and a rat pup the third week is getting inconsistent nutrition, inconsistent digestive load, and an inconsistent feeding response. The fix is to standardize on a prey type and size for each life stage, and to vary only within that range. A 60-gram rat one week and a 50-gram rat the next is fine variation. A fuzzy, an adult mouse, and a rat pup across three weeks is inconsistent and produces digestive stress.

Mistake 4: Ignoring body condition. The most common mistake in adult corn snake feeding is to feed according to a chart or a calendar, without reference to the actual body condition of the snake. An adult corn snake that is visibly overweight (rounded body, rolls of fat, sluggish feeding response) does not need a 14-day feeding schedule. An adult corn snake that is visibly underweight (visible spine, prominent head shape, lethargy) needs more food, not less. The chart is a starting point. The body is the actual reference.

A practical assessment guide

To assess body condition in a corn snake, you need a calm snake (give it 5 minutes after handling to settle), a flat surface, and a good light source. Look for:

  • The dorsal view: the body should be roughly cylindrical, with a slight taper from mid-body to tail. The lateral outline should be smooth, without rolls of fat or visible spine. The body should be approximately the same width as the snake's head at the thickest point of the body (the rule of thumb is "the head and the body should be roughly the same width"; an adult corn snake with a body much wider than its head is overweight).
  • The lateral view: the body should be round but not bulging. There should be a clear taper from mid-body to tail. The vent (cloaca) should be clean and not protruding.
  • The palpation: gentle palpation of the mid-body should reveal muscle tone but not fat rolls. The spine should be palpable but not prominent. The ribs should not be visible.
  • The behavioral cues: a well-fed adult corn snake is calm, has a slow, deliberate feeding response, and rests in the warm end of the enclosure for 24–48 hours after a meal. An underfed snake is restless, active, and has a strong feeding response. An overfed snake has a sluggish response, may refuse meals, and may have a permanently "puffy" appearance.

The schedule and prey size, side by side

For a quick reference, here is the prey schedule I use:

  • 7–20 g hatchling: 1–2 g pinky, every 5–7 days.
  • 20–40 g hatchling/early juvenile: 2–3 g pinky or small fuzzy, every 5–7 days.
  • 40–80 g juvenile: 3–5 g fuzzy, every 7 days.
  • 80–150 g subadult: 5–9 g hopper or small adult mouse, every 7–10 days.
  • 150–300 g subadult: 9–13 g large hopper, 13–25 g adult mouse, or 30–50 g small rat pup, every 10–14 days.
  • 300–600 g adult: 50–80 g small to medium rat, every 14–21 days.
  • 600–900 g large adult: 80–120 g medium rat, every 14–21 days.
  • 900+ g very large adult: 100–150 g large rat, every 21–28 days.

These are starting points. The actual schedule for your snake should be adjusted based on body condition, growth rate, season, and reproductive status (a female in breeding season needs more food; a male in the off-season needs less).

The bottom line

Sizing prey for a corn snake is a skill, not a chart. The "same width as the body" rule is a useful starting point but not a perfect rule. The switch from mice to rats is a nutritional and digestive decision, not just a size decision. The four common mistakes — prey too large, prey too small, inconsistent prey type, ignoring body condition — are all fixable with regular assessment and adjustment. A corn snake that is fed appropriately at every life stage will be a healthy, active, long-lived snake (20+ years is realistic). The right prey size is the one that produces a round but not puffy body, a calm but not sluggish feeding response, a 14–21 day interval between meals at adult stage, and a snake that looks like a corn snake is supposed to look — cylindrical, tapered, alert, and muscular. The keeper who feeds by body condition, not by chart, will get that result.
